My career as a travel writer and photographer fell off the back of a truck in 1986, during a 28-week overland expedition from London to Johannesburg inspired by childhood hours spent reading Wilbur Smith adventure novels and Jane Goodall's In The Shadow of Man.
Having written travel articles for newspapers and magazines for three decades, I now write bushwalking guidebooks filled with descriptions, maps and gorgeous colour photographs: Top Walks in Victoria, Top Walks in Tasmania and Top Walks in Australia. The 2nd Edition of TWIA is due for release in 2022.
Many frustrating attempts to snow ski, mountain bike, and ride beasts of burden clarified why bushwalking appeals to me so much - in addition to keeping me out of gyms and enabling me to control my own momentum. What's not to love about the taste of waterfall spray; the sound of wind in she-oaks; the feeling of insignificance in wild places far from civilisation?
So compiling walking guidebooks is a perfect fit.
I've been a photographer as long as I remember - initially with a Kodak instamatic camera and now with a mirrorless Lumix G9. My shelves are bowed with the weight of colour prints and slides and my hard drives full of digital images.
My writing career has taken me to many countries and more recently focused my attention on outdoor Australia.
Many of my images are available as Fine Art Prints.
